Vinegrowing: This Merlot is grown at the Can Massana estate at a height of 650m (2,000ft) above sea level. The soil is light clay and average production is 3,800 kg / ha. Two prunings are undertaken, one in the Winter, and another green pruning in the Summer, to promote quality and safeguard the health of the bunches. Merlot grapes are typically small, violet blue, with moderately thick skins and sweet flesh.

Harvest: The fully manual harvest takes place in mid-September, when potential alcohol reaches 13.5º, acidity (Ph) is 6.1 as expressed in tartaric acid and the fruit is in excellent health.

Vinification: Vinification and maceration at 27º- 28ºC (80º- 82ºF) last 21 days. During fermentation the must is transferred from tank to tank and pumped over (délestage) in order to achieve uniformity of colour, aroma, and body. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation takes place after this.

Ageing: We use carefully chosen, medium toasted, fine-grained barriques with a useful life of four years. The wine ages in cask for at least 12 months, followed by a minimum of three years in bottle before being classified ‘RESERVA’ and released onto the market. This wine was declared EXCELLENT by a tasting panel whereas the general rating for the D.O Penedès was Very Good.

Tasting Notes: Bright scarlet red colour reminiscent of cherries. Intense and complex nose with notes of ripe plums and toasted nuts and a hint of roast red peppers. Additional complexity develops gradually after opening, with vanilla, cinnamon and a suggestion of balsam. The palate is appetising, velvety, rich and long with sweet, ripe tannins.

Serving: An excellent accompaniment to rich foods such as sausages and other charcuterie. Perfect with pork, beef, veal and duck. It also goes very well with fish cooked in a sauce.
