Family roots, a tradition of quality
A fine wine is the reflection and the expression of the soil, a vineyard and of a family. Only when these three factors are united and combined harmoniously can wines of the highest quality be created.
Juvé is a surname deep rooted in the Penedes region. In these lands, so suitable for the cultivation of the vine, the Juvé family have dedicated themselves to viticulture for centuries. Love of the vine, unceasing work to produce the best grapes, continual research to draw from the raw material all its beauty and harmony, this has always been the prime objective of the Juvés.
Juvé & Camps is the expression of a privileged land, the Penedes, of dedication to viticulture, a hundred year activity over three generations which has now achieved an international reputation for the family run company.
Two hundred years ago in 1796, Joan Juvé Mir, a bold and enterprising vine grower with ideas way ahead of his time, laid the foundations of what would become the family firm. He began the task which was carried on by his son, Antoni Juvé Escaiola, who, amongst other challenges, had to confront the effects of the terrible phylloxera plague. Advocating replanting, with other leading figures of the Penedes, he led a drive to restore the vineyards and to rebuild the wine production of the region. A man respected and loved by his contemporaries, his example encouraged his son, Joan Juvé Baqués, to build the family’s first winery. He married Teresa Camps Farré, an exceptional woman and an enthusiastic supporter who inspired her husband to launch, in 1921, the first sparkling wine under the “Juvé” brand. It was made in the underground cellars beneath the family home in San Sadurní d’Anoia. Professional prestige and business acumen were added to a name destined to occupy a place of honour.
Their two sons, Josep and Joan, joined the management of the firm at the beginning of the 1940’s. They gave a new momentum to the companies development, in particular by building a new winery on the outskirts of the town. Then, at the end of the sixties, the founders grandsons brought young energy to the company which by then had acquired a solid reputation and a strong presence in the sparkling wine market.
Some years later, under the direction of Josep and Joan Juvé, a thorough restructuring of the company was undertaken with the enlarging of the underground cellars for the production and maturing of the “Cavas” as well as the bringing in of some important technical advances. They were pioneers of such important aspects of the production of base wine as pneumatic presses and fermentation temperature control. These advances enabled the company to make “Cavas” of the highest quality.
At the beginning of the seventies, Juvé & Camps was now a highly reputed company, regularly opening new markets and whose “Cavas” were exported to the most important consuming markets, Great Britain, The United States, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Venezuela,...
The firms development, from father to son, over three generations, has culminated in the construction of a fine new winery for the production and ageing of still wines, in the middle of the Espiells property. Created by the family architect, Josep Juvé Raventós, it is one of the most up to date in the region. Thus, a project begun two hundred years ago by Senyor Joan and Senyora Teresa, has grown and progressed into the reality of the thriving enterprise of today.
